Woody the woodpecker

This morning, a juvenile red bellied woodpecker flew directly into our sliding glass window. After calling a friend of a friend (who is an Ornithologist), he suggested that we put the bird in a box, cover him up and leave him in a dark place for a few hours. Apparently, some birds are just temporally stunned by the impact and will recover after some time in a quiet environment.

Unfortunately, by noon time the woodpecker was still not able to fly away, so we took it to The Raptor Trust, which is a nonprofit avian rehabilitation here in New Jersey. Just the other day, the center released a bald eagle back into the wild after it has spent 6 weeks in their rehab center. You can read all about it here.

Anyway, here is our little woodpecker friend awaiting his trip to the hospital:

Below is a snowy white owl and a bald eagle which we were able to see after we dropped off the woodpecker:

There are about 70 exterior cages that house recuperating birds that will be released, as well as unreleasable individuals that reside at the facility. I will be contacting them in two days to find out how the woodpecker is doing. Hopefully, if it has recovered they will release it back into the wild.

How cool that there is a place around that does that, I will have to remember next time we have a bird injury.

Hope Woody is feeling better soon...

How sweet that you took care of it. They're really cool birds. We have one that visits our yard from time to time.

Make sure and let us know what ends up happening. Great bonus, at least, getting to see those other birds. I don't know how many people would have done what you did.

Awwww..poor little guy. You sound like me. I am the rescuer of all injured animals. My husband is constantly rolling his eyes and saying "What have you brought home this time?" I hope he(she?) is O.K.

I'll be eager to hear how Woody comes along. I wish him (or her) only the best but have to admit to a woodpecker aversion after one attacked my house nonstop. I needed some boards replaced. Hopefully THAT little guy is off pecking some tree in the woods now.

Props to you for taking good care of him. I've taken several animals to our wildlife rehad center.

Holy Moly! I swear the same thing happened to us Sunday...and it was a woodpecker!!! It hit our front living room window, and I thought it was dead, poor little guy. We didn't mess with him, and he started to move after a few minutes, and flew off after about 15 minutes...
